Planned Giving

Leaving a Legacy

Healing and hope for future generations of Ethiopian women

Planned giving, such as naming 'Catherine Hamlin Fistula Foundation Fund' in your Will (also known as a legacy gift,) is a simple, powerful and flexible way to make an enduring commitment to Ethiopian women.

A gift in your Will - or living trust – will transform the lives of future generations of Ethiopian women through the prevention and treatment of devastating childbirth injuries.

A bequest or gift in your Will can allow you to make a bigger impact than you ever thought possible. Whether large or small, your gift will ensure sustainable funding for our life-changing work - and it is greatly appreciated.

Here’s how your planned gift could help Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia into the future.

  • $36,000 could restore the lives and dignity of 40 women through standard fistula surgery
  • $100,000 could restore the lives and dignity of 40 women through complex fistula surgery

Annalisa wanted to make a lifelong difference

Long-term supporter, Annalisa, has included a planned gift to Hamlin

“I strongly empathize with women suffering from horrific injuries related to obstructed labor that leave them incontinent, shunned and living in isolation and poverty. It is not their fault they lose their babies and get injured during childbirth. They need to be fully supported.

The first time I heard about Catherine Hamlin and obstetric fistula was through her book, The Hospital by the River. Catherine and her husband, Reg sacrificed much and were inspirational for dedicating their lives to eradicate obstetric fistula from Ethiopia.

I went on the 16-day Hamlin Ethiopian Adventure in November 2015. It is heart-warming and uplifting to be able to help women recover from ill health and misery to live productive lives amongst family and community. I feel privileged to help prevent obstructed births through Hamlin’s cohorts of midwives, who are bringing about long-term change.

We should honor Catherine and Reg’s legacy by continuing their work and building bridges between our two countries.”

How to leave a legacy gift

Bequest giving allows you to bequeath a specific dollar amount, property to be sold, or a percentage of your residual estate. Your estate will receive an estate tax charitable deduction for the amount of the gift from KBFUS.

KBFUS can provide you with sample language to include in your last Will and testament to make a charitable bequest to your existing legacy fund or to establish a new legacy fund at KBFUS.

If you are based in the US or Canada and are interested in leaving a bequest to Catherine Hamlin Fistula Foundation or would like more information, please email [email protected].

Please also email us if you have already named Catherine Hamlin Fistula Foundation Fund in your Will. By letting us know, we can thank you, record your planned gift and ensure you receive regular updates about the programs your gift will support.

Your legacy gift can empower a woman like Elsabet

Elsabet went into labor at her mother’s house but, during a long, obstructed labor, her baby died and she sustained serious obstetric fistula injuries that left her leaking urine uncontrollably. “That was the shameful moment in my life. I become completely hopeless.”One day she heard about Hamlin’s Addis Ababa fistula hospital. She made the long journey and finally received surgery to repair her fistula injury. She is now completely dry.
