Judy recently chose to become one of our amazing Monthly Givers. She shares her motivations for giving monthly to make an even greater impact for women.
My husband and I both retired now,we have five grandchildren and breed parrots as a hobby - we currently have about 150 of them!Β
A few years ago, a local resident started raising money for Hamlin and that was the first I heard of it. I was awed by the organization,in repairing and caring for fistula patients, so I decided to go on a Hamlin Ethiopian Adventure last November. We met some very dedicated and caring staff and every little thing we can do to help is welcomed. Monthly giving is a no-brainer.
Obstetric fistula is curable and the lives of the patients and their families can be enriched way beyond their expectations. The whole of life care offered to patients particularly stands out to me. It makes sense to offer not only physical treatment but also emotional and ongoing medical support, occupational training and even assistance with funding for small business startups. Even in advanced countries like the United States, such commitment to a patient as a whole person is rare.
The costs of immediate intervention are miniscule compared to the human tragedy of doing nothing. Many of these countries [like Ethiopia] just canβt afford to do this work. It is up to us, who have that capacity, to step in and help.
